I knew I was right in thinking that the original Everquest had a Cartography system that was implemented in one of it’s many expansion packs, no wonder I used to get lost so often in that game.


I have to admit though, that since then not a lot of games have implemented that system, which is a great shame as it gave the game a scary unexplored feeling even if you were able to download maps that others had drawn out. It’s also strange the more I look up the more I remember of the system itself, and how well intergrated it was.

Turns out Ultima Online also had a Cartography system as well, slightly more complicated but worked very similar, and could be used to make treasure maps.
